The United States has begun imposing a visa ban on violent Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank. US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced the visa ban on Tuesday after warning Israel several times about the violence in the West Bank.

The visa ban is primarily aimed at Israeli citizens who engage in violence in addition to illegal settlers. Reuters reported this information in a report on Wednesday.

The U.S. began imposing visa restrictions on people involved in violence in the Israeli-occupied West Bank on Tuesday, according to reports, U.S. officials said. The move comes after repeated appeals to Israel to stop violence against Jewish settlers, mainly in the West Bank.

In a statement, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said, “The United States has repeatedly opposed any actions that destabilize the West Bank, including Israeli settler attacks on Palestinians and Palestinian attacks on Israelis.”

He said, “We have emphasized the need for the Israeli government to take more effective measures to bring to account the extremist settlers who have committed violent attacks against Palestinians in the West Bank.” President Biden has repeatedly said such attacks are unacceptable. During my visit to Israel last week too, I made it clear that the United States is ready to use its own powers to take action against such matters.

Confirming the imposition of visa bans against Israeli citizens who settle illegally and engage in violence, Blinken said, “Today, the State Department, through acts of violence or other actions in the West Bank, restricts essential rights, services and basic rights of civilians to undermine peace, security or stability.” Implementing the new visa restriction policy against people involved with The family members of such persons may also be covered by this restriction.’

Reuters reports that President Joe Biden and other senior US officials have repeatedly warned that Israel must act to end Israeli settler violence against Palestinians in the West Bank. Attacks have increased in recent months as Jewish settlements expand, and the violence has escalated since Hamas’ unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7.
