Locals arrested a woman named Shahinur Begum while stealing a newborn baby from Barisal Sher-i-Bangla Medical College Hospital. A case is being filed against the arrested woman. This incident happened on Wednesday (November 18) at noon.
Metropolitan Kotwali Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Azimul Karim confirmed the matter.
He said the rescued newborn was returned to his mother’s arms. The detained Shahinur Begum is the wife of Anich Mia of Charhogal village of Barisal Sadar upazila. However, whether he stole it himself or is involved in a gang of thieves is under investigation.
According to hospital sources, Kakali Begum, the wife of Helal Bepari, a resident of Kaunia Bisik Road area, gave birth to a boy through surgery on Tuesday (January 17) afternoon. Kakali Begum went to the toilet with Nanad Runu Begum after leaving the newborn in bed at around 11 o’clock on Wednesday. But he came back and found that he had no children.
Meanwhile, around noon Shahadat Hossain, secretary of Ward 17 councilor office of Barisal City Corporation, saw a woman carrying something with a veil in the street of her house. He was suspicious of the twisting pattern.
Shahadat Hossain said, when he asked the woman, he showed her out. Then I saw a newborn. No one keeps his child in the way he has twisted the veil. When the matter was suspected, the police came and rescued the woman and the newborn.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Metropolitan Police. Fazlul Karim said Shahinur Begum was arrested with the help of locals from Amanatganj water tank area. Later we inquired at the hospital and found out that the newborn was stolen from there. The rescued newborn was delivered to his mother’s arms.
