Banalata News Desk.Imran Khan, the former prime minister of the country, was shot dead in a rally demanding the ‘restoration of democracy’ in Pakistan. According to the country’s English daily Dawn, in a televised video, Imran was seen removing another vehicle with his right leg bandaged from the container where the rally was being staged in Wazirabad, Punjab.

Imran was shot below the knee, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) spokesman Fawad Chaudhuri told Reuters. “Imran Khan and (party colleague) Faisal Javed were shot. One bullet hit Imran’s leg below the knee. Both have been taken to hospital for treatment,” he said.

Pakistani media also say that Imran was taken to the hospital from the gathering place in Wazirabad on Thursday. The Punjab Police also reached the spot after getting the information about the firing. Leaders of Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party said four people, including Imran, were injured in Thursday’s shooting. But no one was killed.

Imran Khan’s senior aide Rauf Hasan said that there was an attempt to kill Imran. He was shot in the leg. But the injury is not serious. He is stable. Another aide of Imran Khan said that a person opened fire with an automatic weapon. Imran was also injured along with some others. Pakistan’s Geo TV later reported the arrest of a suspect in the shooting.

Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif condemned the attack. He also directed Home Minister Rana Sanaullah to seek an immediate report on the incident from the IGP and Punjab Chief Secretary.

Imran Khan started a long march from Karachi to the capital Islamabad from last Friday to demand early elections in Pakistan. Meanwhile, he was shot dead at a rally in Wazirabad, Punjab. He was taken to a nearby hospital in Lahore.

In a case last month, the Election Commission of Pakistan disqualified Imran Khan from holding any government post. The former cricket star described the case as politically motivated.

Imran was accused of misrepresenting details of gifts from foreign dignitaries and income from their sale. The gifts also included several watches from the famous Rolex brand, a ring and a pair of cuff links.
