Tomorrow is the first falgun. Rituraj is the first day of spring and the eleventh month of the Bengali year. Spring means fullness. Spring means the noise of new life. The first day of Falgun is celebrated in Bangladesh as the first Falgun and Spring Festival which was first organized in 1991 by the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka.
Spring brings the message of redecorating nature, leaving behind the harshness of winter. New leaves grow on the trees. The flower buds come. The birds sing. And the scent of sweet flowers floating in the air. Butterflies match the colorful wings and announce the arrival of the king of seasons. Spring not only in nature, but also in the minds of people awaken the touch of life. So to celebrate the first day of spring, everyone came to the festival. Decorate yourself with the colors of spring.
The name Falgun originally came from the constellation Falguni.
Both the lunar year and the solar year were observed around 1500 BC. Falgun was a full moon month. The observance of the first falgun officially began in the 1950s and 1960s. At that time, the people of Bangladesh started listening to Rabindra Sangeet and observing Pahela Falgun according to Bengali rules to differentiate themselves from the culture of Pakistan.
Many songs, many poems have been written about spring. In the words of the poet Subhash Mukherjee, ‘Flowers burst, and no, it bursts today, spring’. One of the popular songs of Baul emperor Shah Abdul Karim is ‘Basant Batase Sai Go Basant Batase, Friend’s house flower smell comes to my house Sai Go, Basant Batase’. World poet Rabindranath Tagore has written many poems and songs about spring.
Just as the first falgun or spring is our cultural occasion, so too the political significance of this month is infinite. The red color of Shimul and Krishnacura in Fagun reminds us of the martyrs of Bayannar Fagun. The language reminds us of the history of the blood of the martyrs. This month Rafiq Safiq Barkat Salamra gave his life for his mother tongue Bengali language. The independence of Bangladesh came down the ladder of their blood. That is why Fagun is also the month of Bengali rebellion.
