A 12-year-old child has been allegedly raped in a field in Joypurhat. She is a 1st class student of Battali Hafezia Madrasa of the upazila. The accused rapist Isaac, 65, of Tilabadul Madhyapara village in the upazila could not be arrested as he was a fugitive. He is the son of late Abul Kalam of that village. Shafiqul Islam, the father of the raped child, filed a case with the Khetlal Police Station on Wednesday under the Women and Child Abuse Prevention Act.

According to villagers and case sources, Sumi, a 12-year-old child of Shafiqul Islam of Tilabadul Madhyapara village in Khetlal upazila, went to her great-grandmother Sanjida Akter Sumi’s house on Tuesday afternoon to pour oil on her head. After giving the oil, his mother left him on the veranda of the house and went to the bathroom to take a bath. At that time, Sanjida Akhter Sumi’s father-in-law Ishaq Ali (65) found the child alone on the verandah of the house, grabbed the child by the face and took him to his bedroom and raped him. When the child cried and screamed during the rape, the accused’s son’s wife (the child’s older mother) ran to rescue him and the accused rapist fled the scene.

The child’s mother Shamsunnahar and grandmother Mabia Begum said that the child was bleeding in the genitals as a result of rape. We demand exemplary punishment for the rapist. So that no other child has to be the victim of such brutal torture.

“We are demanding immediate arrest of the accused and exemplary punishment under the law,” Ferdousi Rana Chowdhury, a human rights activist and coordinator of various voluntary organizations, told Bhorer Kagoj. Children are not safe with them.

The child’s father Shafiqul Islam has filed a case against the accused under the Women and Child Abuse Prevention Act at Khetlal Police Station on Wednesday (February 2).

Investigating officer of the case SI Habibur Rahman told Bhorer Kagoj that after filing the case, the medical examination of the child has been completed at Joypurhat District Modern Hospital and a statement has been taken in the court under Section 22 of the Women and Children Act.

Khetlal Thana Officer-in-Charge Nirendra Nath Mandal told Bhorer Kagoj that the accused could not be arrested as he was a fugitive. However, wherever Luke is, he will be arrested and brought under the law.

Additional Superintendent of Police Tariqul Islam said the child’s medical examination had been completed and a statement had been taken. As he informed us a day after the incident, the police could not arrest the accused as he was a fugitive. But will be arrested very soon.
