In Naogaon’s Raninagar Upazila, in the official Aman season paddy-rice procurement drive, there was hope but no hope. Although 900 metric tons of cooked rice has been officially collected in the last two months, only 4 metric tons of paddy has been collected. As a result, even though the target of rice collection has been achieved, there is concern that the target of paddy collection has been achieved.

According to the Upazila Food Department, in Raninagar Upazila, the government has decided to purchase 989 metric tonnes of paddy directly from farmers at Tk 28 per kg and 1338 metric tonnes of cooked rice from millers at Tk 40 per kg on December 1 last year. -Rice collection campaign is inaugurated. As per the agreement signed with the millers, 900 metric tons of rice has been procured in the last two months since the inauguration. And only 4 metric tons of paddy has been collected from the farmers. The paddy and rice procurement drive is scheduled till February 26. According to the concerned, the farmers are not giving paddy to the government food warehouses as the price of paddy in the local market is higher than the price fixed by the government. As a result, the paddy collection campaign has come to a standstill.

Meanwhile, farmers say the government has fixed the price of paddy at Tk 28 per kg. But the price of paddy in the local market is more than Rs 150 to Rs 200 per man more than the price fixed by the government. So they are selling paddy in the open market where the price of paddy is higher. As a result, farmers are not giving paddy in government food warehouses.

Sitanath Ghosh, general secretary of Raninagar Upazila Paddy-Rice Mill Owners’ Association, said millers of the upazila were delivering rice to food warehouses as per the agreement with the government. He is saying that the completed rice will be provided within the stipulated time.

Raninagar Upazila Food Warehouse Officer Helal Uddin said, “We hope the target of rice procurement will be achieved within the stipulated time.” However, farmers are not giving paddy in the warehouse as they get the price of paddy in the market.

Raninagar Upazila Paddy-Rice Procurement Committee President and Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sushant Kumar Mahato said the target for rice procurement will be achieved within the stipulated time. But the farmers are not giving paddy in the food warehouse as the price of paddy is high in the market. He also said that these matters have been reported to the higher authorities.
