Meals were being arranged. Cooking for the bride and groom was going on in big pots. Everyone was waiting for the groom. Gurudaspur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mohammad Tamal Hossain attended the wedding before the groom arrived. Arriving at the scene, he stopped the child marriage. At this time the bond was taken from the bride’s father. The incident took place at noon on Friday (January 14) at Bilsha village in Khubjipur union of the upazila.
According to the locals, a child marriage was going on in the 10th class of Bilsha High School in Bilsha village. The groom is a resident of the surrounding area. Around noon, the people of the girl’s house were waiting for the bride and groom to arrive. Gurudaspur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md. Tamal Hossain arrived at the wedding house with some members of Gurudaspur police. The people of Meyer’s house tried to confuse UNO with false information in various ways. However, after inquiring about the preparations for the event, the girl’s family admitted that they would come to see her. UNO Tamal Hossain then terminated the marriage and took a bond from his family stating that he would not marry before the age of 18.
UNO Md. Tamal Hossain said, “I am secretly getting information that preparations are underway to marry a 16 year old student studying in 10th class in Bilsha area. The marriage was stopped immediately after the incident. Upazila administration is determined to stop child marriage.
