College student commits suicide without getting new clothes for Durga Puja

College student Kanak Chandra (18) committed suicide by hanging himself as he could not afford to buy new clothes for his only son during Durga Puja. He is the son of Khagen Chandra, a day laborer from Chhota Kanchi village in Bhatra union of Nandigram upazila of Bogra.

According to the locals, Khagen Chandra works as a day laborer to support the family as well as provide education for his son and daughter. The eldest daughter is an Honors 3rd year student of Bogra Government Azizul Haque College. The son Konak is a high school student from the local Hatkari Degree College.

Due to financial crisis, son Kanak could not afford to buy new shirt and pants during the Durga Puja which started on Monday. Kanak committed suicide by hanging himself at home around 9:30 am on Tuesday. Family members rescued him but he died by then.

Bogra’s Nandigram Upazila Bhatra Union Parishad chairman Morshedul Bari confirmed the death of Konak and said the matter had been reported to the police.
