Khetlal (Joypurhat) Representative.

Khetlal upazila is located at a distance of 14 km from Joypurhat district town. 1 lakh 8 thousand 326 people (according to 2011 census) live in 29605 families covering an area of 142 sq km of this upazila. Established in 1848, the police station did not have any tourist or good quality entertainment center even in the 50 years after independence.

Mamudpur Union Parishad Bhaban is located at a distance of 6 km from the Upazila Sadar. Just two kilometers west of the council building, across the winding paved road in a secluded village in the shadow of the historic Asranga Dighi.

According to land office sources, the area of the lake is 25 acres. It is 1,060 feet long and 1,000 feet wide. There are more than 5,000 ornamental forest and fruit trees planted around the lake.

There are rumors that Asranga Dighi is a very ancient lake. The ancient lake is thought to have been excavated around 618 AD. But there are differences as to who digs. Rajendra Roy dug the lake on the orders of the zamindar maharajas. According to many, Manu Bhutra, a member of the Taherpur royal family, dug this lake. Which was owned by King Kangsh Narayan Roy of the Raj dynasty. Four ghats of 50 feet length were built around the lake to facilitate the bathing and water use of the royal family, which still exists. The lake was re-excavated in 1992 during the then BNP government. As a result, it regains its lost heritage. On November 3 of that year, the then Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia inaugurated the renovation work of the lake and announced to build it as a tourist destination. But even today the announcement has not seen the face of implementation.

On September 5, 2016, Awami League Organizing Secretary Whip Swapan Mamudpur inaugurated an entrance gate at the entrance of the Union Parishad, mentioning the distance to Asranga Dighi. He also visited the lake in March this year with some Chinese nationals to develop it as a tourist destination.

In the long 24 years since 1992, there has been no development. But when Abu Saeed Al Mahmood, the current Whip of the Jatiya Sangsad and MP of Joypurhat-2 constituency, took charge of the town before he was elected as the MP, the development in the lake began to take off. The unpaved road has been replaced by paved road. At present, a modern standard guest house with 6 bricks and 2 rooms has been constructed around the lake to accommodate the guests visiting the lake. Besides, a short familiar plaque of the lake has been constructed on the east side of the guest house.

The people of the upazila are hoping that Whip Swapan will present a beautiful tourist center after 50 years of independence.

Khetlal Upazila Awami League president (acting) Abdul Majid Mollah said it was important to build a tourist center for healthy entertainment and talent development. We are deprived of that direction. Our whip Swapan Bhai is working for it. I hope our popular leader Whip Swapan Bhai will end 50 years of imperfections and present Asranga Dighi as a tourist destination to the people of Khetlal.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer AFM Abu Sufian said, Asranga Dighi is a place of enchanting environment full of trees. My wife also went there to visit. There are 6 benches and 1 2-room guest house for the guests with the funding of the district and upazila councils. Which was officially inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Md. Shariful Islam on September 14. Now a toilet and rain water need to be shed to survive. He added that a project is awaiting approval from the Ministry of Forests and Environment to develop Asranga Dighi as a tourist destination. Work will start as soon as the project is approved. However, I think there should be a recreation center while maintaining all the natural beauty.

Mostakim Mandal, young chairman of Khetlal Upazila, said efforts are being made to develop Asranga Dighi as a tourist destination for beautiful and fair entertainment for the people of the upazila. Some work has already been done. Under the direction of Whip Swapan Bhai, it will be gradually developed as a quality entertainment center.
